1. Energy. "Speed is life" is not entirely accurate. It is actually Energy which is life for a combat pilot. Generally thought of in two forms: Kinetic Energy, represented by speed, and Potential Energy, represented by altitude. To some extent one can be traded for the other, but hard and frequent maneuvering will bleed E away until you are a sitting duck.
